Rev. William R. Eby, 52 rector of Toronto church
Rev. William Robert Eby, 52, rector of St. Mark’s Church, West Toronto died suddenly Tuesday of an embolism.
An army sergeant in World War II, he was taking a post-war commercial course when he decided to become an Anglican priest.
Shortly after his ordination in 1953, he became curate at Holy Trinity Church. After three or four years he became rector at St. John the Evangelist Garrison Church on Portland Ave., and conducted a losing battle to prevent the old church from being demolished. When St. John’s House was built on the site, he remained for a while, then went to St. Mark’s.
He was a member of Metro’s Social Planning Council and chaplain of the Canadian Legion, Royal Canadian Engineers, and, before it was disbanded, to Irish Regiment.
He leaves his wife, Marian.
