Abstract: Nowhere else on Earth is climate change more pronounced than in the Arctic. To study the changing Arctic environment, the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) was established in 2005 in the Canadian high Arctic at Eureka, Nunavut (80oN, 86oW), ~1000 km from the North Pole. Eureka is an excellent location for various scientific studies, ranging from polar ozone depletion, to satellite validation, to characterizing long-range transport of pollution. This talk will summarize the research performed at PEARL and discuss what life is like for a researcher at 80°N..

Twitter, on Monday Nov 9rd, 2015, 7 – 8 p.m. E.S.T., as we explore the success and challenges of animating empty storefronts using pop-up shops with Marcus Westbury of Renew Newcastle, Australia.

Marcus Westbury (@unsungsongs) is founder/creative director of Renew Newcastle. He visited Toronto last in 2012. Now he has written a book – Creating Cities.

How it works

Beginning at 7pm, @PopupShopsTO will launch one question every ten minutes. Questions will be numbered Q1, Q2, etc. Please number your answers A1, A2, etc. and end with #VibrantTO to help everyone follow along.  For each question, our co-host will offer a response then participants will be invited to share their thoughts.

Renew Newcastle is unique scheme that has attracted interest from around the world. It has been described as “a clever partial solution” (Time.com), “a smart, inspired way to deal with unused spaces that might otherwise be left to ruin” (Inside Out), “the transformation of the city centre” (The Newcastle Herald),  “an incredible success …. both to assist the business community in the area while simultaneously [giving] a boost to local artists and designers” (ABC TV), “overwhelmingly positive, with the CBD finally starting to re-emerge” (Jetstar in-flight magazine), “There is genius in this … wow!”(wired.com) and“reviving the city” (Daily Telegraph).

Using a little piece of my teenage years.

Toronto Railroad Museum tweets photos of Junction CN buildings, before the fires

This link will take to to the tweet where you can view each picture.

Having ran errands for the railroad workers in this building as a teenager, then going though it after the fire, these pictures really do bring back memories of how little time really past has after the closures of many of the main railway buildings in the Junction. We lost the roundhouse in 1996 to the building that now houses Rona store.

These buildings sat to the west of Old Weston Rd, at Junction Rd, next to what the Gurney Plant, which now is occupied by the NRT plant.

Photography enthusiasts invited to share their images in contest on Toronto ‘complete streets’ theme

Photography enthusiasts invited to share their images in contest on Toronto ‘complete streets’ theme

 All text the city

The City of Toronto and Spacing Magazine are holding a photography contest to showcase elements that make up a complete street. The City invites submissions and Facebook voting for the Complete Streets Photo Contest until October 31.

The term “complete streets” refers to streets designed to be safe for all users, including people who walk, bicycle, take transit or drive, and people of varying ages and other characteristics such as walking speed. Complete streets also give consideration to other uses of streets, such as sidewalk cafés, street furniture (benches, garbage/recycling bins and transit shelters), trees, utilities and stormwater management.

Photos taken on any street – not limited to Toronto or even Canadian locations – can be submitted using Instagram and Twitter (with the hashtag #TOCompleteStreets in the description), or uploaded to the contest web page, or emailed to completestreets@toronto.ca. Facebook users can vote for their favourites as displayed in an online photo gallery until the end of October, resulting in popular winners in this first phase of the contest.

In the contest’s second phase, in November, an expert panel will shortlist its choice of photos and the public will be invited to vote for their favourites. Prizes will include a vanity City of Toronto street sign, gift certificates for the Spacing Store and subscriptions to Spacing magazine.

The goal of the photo contest is to raise awareness of the complete streets approach and guidelines the City is developing to ensure social, economic and environmental priorities are integrated in street planning and design. The City engaged stakeholders and the general public on the initiative’s guiding principles in the spring, and there will be more public events on complete streets design early in the new year.

The public can join the conversation online using the hashtag #TOCompleteStreets. More information about the photo contest and the complete streets project is available at http://bit.ly/1HLBUAc.

This news release is also available on the City’s website: http://bit.ly/1NXWQIf
