Rehab of 2 existing & juxtaposed buildings for public facilities meant to serve the neighbourhood

This post is a 1st in a series that will continue all next week concerning the development direction of the Junction areas.

The prospect of our community losing the industrial zoning if 108 Vine Ave., this blog author has been consoling the possible and probable loss by reading of efforts where this loss was stopped.

Why the extreme concern – simply put the 3rd industrial revolution is upon the world. Much of development and placement if this new industrial
Revolution is taking place in inner cities. The businesses require industrial zoned buildings and land.

If we allow it to zoned out if existence, our community will not play a part.

Here posted is a example of the highest esteem.

The intervention has been performed in the two juxtaposed buildings of a former factory complex, a nineteenth century textile mill located in Barcelona. Rehabilitation of 2 existing and juxtaposed buildings for the location of public facilities meant to serve the neighbourhood, conserving its original factory complex façade –protected in the Architectural Heritage Protection Plan- and conserving the structure of the roof characteristic of the original factory.

Rehabilitation of the factory complex for the preservation of its endangered typology in the heart of the neighbourhood. The goal was to place the requested programme inside the buildings through box like structures separated from the roofs to highlight the existing structure. One of the buildings is an open playground with plenty of light and colour, that maintains the reference of its original structure; the other contains the educational programme, in an existing space that highlights the section and the volume of the original building.

    We really need to maintain and adapt the Junction’s remaining historic industrial buildings to new uses when the industry moves out. They’re an important part of the neighbourhood’s history and character. They can support new businesses and economic activity like no big box store can. National Rubber Technologies on Junction Road for instance might not look that historic with its current facade, but the building behind the modern pink concrete cladding probably applied in the 1980s dates back to either the late 19th century or early 20th century.
