2020-08-14 Permanent Inspector PERMANENT INSPECTOR ASKED FOR ABATTOIR GUNNS, LIMITED TO DETERMINE CORRECTNESS OF HEALTH OFFICERS CHARGES. Gunns, Limited, one of the abattoir concerns which Dr. C. J. Hastings Medical Officer of Health, has given ten days to clean up or shut up, addressed a letter yesterday to the Veterinary Director-General, Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, requesting that an official inspector be permanently stationed at their plant to determine the correctness of the statements made by the Medical Officer of Health of the city of Toronto regarding the contamination of West Toronto sewers by Gunns, Limited, and other abattoir concerns. The following is quoted from a letter addressed by Gunns, Lmited, to The Globe: According to the provisions of the meat and canned foods act passed by the Dominion Department of Agriculture is charged not only with the inspection of all animals slaughtered and food products prepared in our establishment, but with the sanitary conditions of same, and a staff of inspectors is maintained at our plant for this purpose, but hitherto have been confined to the ordinary working hours of the day. We have to-day written to the Veterinary Director-General, Ottawa, requesting that an official inspector be permanently stationed in our plant on night duty, to determine the correctness or otherwise of the reports published. We welcome such action on the part of the Government, and no doubt Dr. Hastings would also.
