Metrolinx, the regional transportation agency for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, has joined the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. This program creates awareness for individuals with non visible disabilities by wearing a sunflower pin, which indicates to GO Transit and UP Express employees that they may need additional help, understanding, or a bit more time.
The sunflower pin is a discreet way for individuals to communicate their needs without having to disclose specific details about their conditio. Metrolinx is the first public transit agency in North America to adopt this program, which has been successful in other regions, such as the UK.

below are 2 examples from recent research findings on the project:
-
Personal Stories: Many participants have shared their experiences, highlighting how the sunflower lanyard has made their daily lives easer. For instance, a mother traveling with her son found the program invaluable in navigating airports and public spaces.
-
Increased Awareness: The program has raised awareness about non visible disabilities, helping others understand the need for patience and support. This has led to more inclusive environments in various settings, including airports, retail stores, and public transportation
