Update on The Junctioneer

This is a note to the readers of The Junctioneer.  As you have noticed, posts have not been made for several weeks.  The Junctioneer, Robert is currently in the hospital with a very serious condition called Guillain Barre Syndrome .   If anyone wishes to post best wishes to Robert, I will be sure to read them to him.

A new Junction area restaurant to check out

There is a new restaurant at Bloor and Sterling, called Zocalo which sounds amazing according to the write up in Now Magazine (link below). The food sounds affordable, fresh and creative.   Has anyone heard anything about it?

Sweet Celebrations

One of the few things that the Junction is missing is a really decadent bakeshop.

Just a short jaunt west on Dundas past the Humber River @ 4158 Dundas, is a new cupcake shop called Swirls.  The original location is in Streetsville and they hope to be open their Dundas location very soon, the opening has been delayed due to the recent City strike and their permits were delayed.  Their Grand Opening is scheduled for September 12th.  http://www.swirlscupcakes.ca/index.php

Apparently the owner of Swirls looked at the Junction for a location but found better rent a little West.  A wise thing that the owners did was have two retailers combine in the the same space, the cupcake business is beautifully complemented by a coffee shop.  They also have lots of parking at the back of their store.  cupcake 001           cupcake 002

Lovely afternoon in the Park – Clay and Paper bicycle theatre troop in Vine Parkette

Today was one of those days that made one feel great about the community in which we live.  Thank you to the “Junk Mommas” who hosted the exuberant Clay and Paper bicycle theatre troop in Vine Parkette.

It was a perfectly sunny day, where a plethora of children splashed in the cool wading pool (which was sorely missed during the recent strike).  Families gathered on picnic blankets, munching on barbecued goods while chatting with their neighbours and watching the entertaining puppet show.

It could have not been a more perfect community building event.

New Health Food Store in the Junction

Welcome to the  latest retail store, Optimum Natural Foods(not sure if it is the same store of the same name in the Beaches) which opened just a couple of weeks ago.     The store is on the south side of Dundas just west of Keele.  The shelves are just getting stocked, but it looks very promising and is run by a very  friendly couple.  A health food store is definitely a welcomed addition to the myriad of offerings on the Junction Dundas Street West  strip.

This store  has lots of baby paraphernalia for the apparent Junction baby boom, such as homeopathic teething medicine, baby food, Chlorine Free diapers etc.  The prices also seem very reasonable, eco-friendly cleaning supplies were considerably cheaper than other stores.  They will also have bulk organic nuts and grains, in addition to vitamins and beauty supplies.

Optimum Natural Foods located at 2865 Dundas Street West phone # 416-693-5328

Square Foot Gardening ideal for Junction Yards

homepicmelWhat Is Square Foot Gardening?
Would you like a garden filled with beautiful flowers, luscious vegetables, fresh herbs, but NO WEEDS or HARD WORK? Well, that is what Square Foot Gardening is all about.  I’ve taken all the hard work out of gardening. No heavy digging, watering, weeding, thinning, or over-flowering harvest. What is left is a productive, well-kept, colorful garden that looks more like a landscaped area than a typical single-row garden-Mel Bartholomew

“Square Foot Gardens” would be an ideal addition to Junction backyards.   Living so close to the railroad tracks, we sometimes question the integrity of the soil to grow vegetables.  The concept of Square Foot Gardens would be a alternate methodology in growing urban crops, but not directly in the soil.  Square Foot Gardens involves the construction of a 4 x 4 ft raised box onto any surface (could be soil or even concrete), this box is then filled with a mixture of good quality soil.  The box is then divided a grid of 4 x 4, giving you the opportunity of planting 16 different crops.  Apparently this method yields a much larger harvest than traditional row planting.

New Bloor West Delectable Locale

Bloor West Village has a new bakery that will tempt your willpower, creativity, and caloric intake.  The concept of self customized cookies follows the hot New York City trend of marble slab ice cream shops where you can choose the “mix in’s” of your choice to be mashed into your icy treat.

At Sweet Flour, you choose your cookie base and then pick from the 20 items offered to make it your own special treat, your cookie is rapidly baked and then voila your eclectic cookie is ready to eat!

This newer concept shop will nicely compliment the pleothera of bakeries currently in Bloor West Village.
