Just 20 years ago the Junction had numerous commercial bakeries and related businesses. Keele Centre at 500 Keele St had a huge Weston bakery on the north side of the building.
There was Seven Star Bakery on Jackson Place. The build has now been converted to mews homes.
Maple leaf mills was a huge flour processor with two silo building, one of which is now gone.
Now with Canada bread leaving the Junction Rd area the last of the bakery businesses are gone.

Any word when they will close?
They will close by the end of the year 2011 for sure, this is what Maple Leaf/Canada Bread Customer Service is telling anyone who calls in to inquire.
Here is link for the Canada Bread closure, the two new production lines to start by the end of the year are the employees from the Cawthra location who decided to move to the new plant in Hamilton.

In the third quarter, Canada Bread’s Fresh Bakery division incurred “$2.3 million of duplicative overhead costs” from the operation of three smaller and older bakeries in the Greater Toronto Area. It will close these bakeries between the end of this year through early 2013 as it transfers their production to the new bakery in Hamilton.
At that point, this $2.3 million a year cost should disappear. At present, the Hamilton bakery is producing rolls and breads. By the end of this year, it will start commercial production of two other product lines.
In 2012, the Hamilton bakery will start producing the four other lines, including flatbreads. After that, the bakery should generate additional cost savings.
It seems that the Canada Bread facility plant might now close the second week of January 2012 so that the laid off employees receiving packages do not get taxed in 2011 but 2012 and stay around at least until after christmas holidays. I still would like to know who purchased the plant since it has been sold.
One of the area residents informed me that Canada Bread has now been SOLD!! the site will close down this month (Jan 2012).
Anyone know who purchased it?
The Commercial MLS Relestate shows that Canada Bread has been SOLD but does not mention who the buyer is, this is what i have been told. If anyone has access and can call up the buying agent or figure it out, please update the junctioneer blog with there findings since i and others in the area would be interested in finding this out.
It seems that the new buyer of the Canada Bread Facility who ever that is, takes full possession of the property on March 31. 2012. The plant needs to be vacant before the new owner takes over. I am still hearing sometime this month the plant will be shutdown and moved to hamilton, the south end is already shutdown. The plant will then have all it's machinery etc… removed once the shutdown occurs.
I went by the Canada Bread site yesterday and it seems that they are now shutdown for good. There are two very large garbage bins one in the north end and one in the south end of the site for the material there removing from the site. Not a single car in the parking lot for Canada Bread employees, so this tells me the plant is now shutdown and the building looks to be almost vacant inside.
Canada Bread has confirmed the Bakery at 130 Cawthra Avenue is now shutdown for good and that they are now just removing equipement etc.. from the site. The new owner of the facility is to take ownership March 31, 2012.
