The Toronto International Summer Sculpture Symposium, which was held in High Park in 1967. The symposium, which was initiated and organized as a centennial project by Canadian sculptor Gerald Gladstone, with financial assistance from municipal, provincial, and federal governments, was a significant public art event in Toronto’s history. It was intended to be an opportunity “for the citizens of Toronto to observe and become involved in the creative process of twelve sculptoral forms by artists from various parts of North America and Europe.” Artists were provided with their required materials, room and board, and an honorarium for their sculptures, which were created in High Park and became the property of the City of Toronto.
