Toronto may allow drinking alcohol in some parks this summer. The city council passed a motion to investigate a pilot project that would permit responsible drinking from August 5 to October 9 , with a report due in July.

In response to concerns by several councillors including Coun. Gord Perks about the harmful impacts of alcohol, the staff report will also include recommendations for “harm reduction, treatment or education programs” that should be in place prior to the approval and implementation of any pilot location.
Alcohol comes with harms and is the most dangerous drug in Canada, said Perks, who wanted to wait for the staff report before deciding if a pilot is the way to go.
“If you are going to expand access you have to bring programs around it,” he said. “Instead of waiting for that advice, some headline-seekers have decided to bring it to council ahead of the report.”
